Dear Friends
My daughters Barney and Berley and I have returned to our Prescott Valley home now that I have resigned my job as Senior Counsel to the House Financial Services Committee in Washington, DC.
I have taken the first formal steps with the Federal Election Commission to begin a campaign for the U.S.Congress from Arizona's 1st District. In the next several weeks I will be officially rolling out my campaign.
The experience I've had standing up to the Bush administration to fight for hard working Arizonans has made it clear to me that we need a strong new voice in Washington who is ready from Day One to make Congress finally work for us again.
I'm not a career politician. I'm a dedicated public interest lawyer who has spent his career trying to make government work for real people. I don't understand political double-talk. I like to speak frankly and say what's on my mind.
So here goes...
* Our economy is unfair. George W. Bush and the Washington politicians are taking care of big corporations and leaving regular people behind. We're paying triple what we paid just a few years ago for a gallon of gas or milk, but our salaries haven't gone up.
* The war in Iraq is an enormous waste of American lives and money. We need to end it quickly and bring our fellow Americans home to their families.
* I've seen it up close--lobbyists have far too much influence in Washington. We need to break their stranglehold on Congress.
* The healthcare system seems to work for insurance companies, but nobody else. It's a tragedy that 10 million American children and many thousands in Arizona will fail to have health coverage because of George W. Bush's mean-spirited decision to veto funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program. And it's an outrage that we spend hundreds of millions on no-bid contracts in Iraq, but we won't find the money to keep hospitals and health clinics open in rural Arizona.
* Our federal tax dollars aren't coming home to Arizona. They're going to pay for highways in other states and new roads in Iraq. It's time to put our tax dollars to work in Arizona again.
That's just a taste of what I think on the issues that matter most.
